METAPHYSICS & CONTINUITY
“What persists through time and death?”
Shadow: Necrophilia of memory / Obsession with the past
Foundational Belief: The Choirs of Epitaph believe nothing truly endures unless it is remembered. By preserving memory, legacy and continuity against oblivion, they grant permanence to that which would otherwise be lost.
Only after loss do humans seriously confront mortality. Questions emerge: What remains after we die? Legacy? Memory? Soul? Information? This is one of humanity's oldest obsessions. Religion lives here. What survives death? What is a soul? What is persistence through change? What constitutes continuity?
The Choirs of Epitaph believe that existence leaves consequence. A life may end, a species may vanish, a civilization may fall, and a place may change beyond recognition, yet none simply becomes nothing. Having existed means having participated in reality: altering other lives, environments, events, ideas, or the conditions from which the future emerges. Whether these surviving traces constitute the continued existence of the original thing is ultimately unknowable. The Choirs do not claim certainty where none exists. They REMEMBER because what existed mattered by virtue of having existed at all.
Yet remembrance is not the same as honor. The Choirs acknowledge what was without pretending that everything deserves equal reverence. Cruelty is remembered truthfully, not celebrated; benevolence may be revisited because its consequences continue to enrich the present. Every existence warrants acknowledgment but the depth and character of remembrance depend upon what that existence left behind.
To the Choirs, remembrance is therefore neither resurrection nor refusal to accept loss. It is the recognition that something can cease to exist and still remain capable of changing what comes after.
